Support the American Battlefield Protection Program
On September 9, 1862, after entering Maryland with his Army of Northern Virginia,
Robert E. Lee determined that, in order protect his commmunication and supply
lines to the South, the Federal garrison at Harpers Ferry had to be removed.
To this end, at Fredericktown (Frederick) Maryland, he issued Special Order 191.
