On the lawn at Violet Bank, Colonial Heights, Virginia, near the plaque marked by an arrow on the 1998 photograph, Lee maintained his heaquarters during the siege of Petersburg.(See Petersburg).

Lee's Table at the Surrender.
Contrary to some paintings, Lee and Grant sat a different tables during the surrender. Because of the way Lee and his army were treated by Grant, Lee never allowed a negative statement to be made about Grant after the war. (See Appomattox).

FROM APPOMATTOX, STOPPED AT WINDSOR, HIS
BROTHER'S FARM, TO SPEND THE NIGHT. BUT
AS THE HOUSE WAS CROWDED, HE PITCHED HIS
TENT HERE, THE LAST NIGHT HE SPENT UNDER
CANVAS. HE TOOK BREAKFAST WITH THE
GILLAMS, WHOSE PROPERTY HE CAMPED ON,
BEFORE PROCEDING THE NEXT DAY.
