Lt. Col. John M. Leggett's tombstone can also be seen in the photograph of the Confederate Officer's Section entrance, above. A member of the 10th Louisiana Infantry, he was killed, May 3, 1862, at Chancellorsville. His photograph and descriptive remarks are tied to the tombstone. (G)

Major General David Rumph "Neighbor" Jones (G)
April 5, 1825 - January 20, 1863

Born April 5, 1825, Orangeburg District, S. C. - Died January 20, 1863, Richmond, VA.

Jones graduated West Point in 1846. He served in the Mexican War. After the war, he was an instructor at West Point, and then assigned to the Adjutant General's Department. Jones resigned from the U.S. Army in 1861.

Later, in 1861, Jones was a Major and Chief of Staff to P. G. T. Beauregard. He hauled down the United States flag at Fort Sumter after the surrender. On June 17, 1861, Jones became a Brigader General in the Provisional Army. He commanded a division under Magruder in the Peninsula campaign, and the Seven Days battles. His division was under Longstreet at Second Manassas, helping Longstreet rescue Jackson. Made a Major General on March 10, 1862, David Jones fought well at Thoroughfare Gap, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg in September 1862.

Major General David R. Jones died of heart disease January 20, 1863.
