Oakwood Cemetery - 1865*

Approximately 16,000 Confederate soldiers are buried at Oakwood cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Most are unknown and a large number were killed in 1862 (Gaines' Mill possibly).

Elsewhere on the internet there is a site that deplores the condition of this cemetery and has photographs backing up its claim. As of March, 2001, the cemetery is much improved over that site's description. It appears that an organization called Oakwood Cemetery Trust, Inc. has been instrumental in improving the Confederate portion of the cemetery.
